Fort Noorddijk
A waker in water, that's what we can call this battery. A battery because it is not a fortress. A fort can defend itself independently for a long time. That was not the case with this work. The occupation was not large and the stock certainly wasn't either.
A watchman in water, because the function of this battery was to guard the Noorddijk in the event of an inundation. The large flanking, firing in front of the fortress of Hellevoetsluis to defend the area and thus also towards Fort Penserdijk near Brielle.
Construction started in 1883 and this battery was completed in 1885.
In 1906 this battery was equipped with 2 cannons of 8 cm steel, 2 mortars and 2 machine guns (Gardner M90). The occupation consisted of a maximum of 45 men.
The bombproof building consisted of an officer's quarters, guard room, depot (storage of artillery), artillery storage room (for operation and maintenance), telegraph office and ammunition storage.
The ash trees have now been removed due to the ash dieback.
On special days this battery can be visited and we give tours, see our activities page.
