26 June 2013, Arrival of the Cannon of 24 IJ in Hellevoetsluis

Finally the time had come. The large iron cannon with a caliber of 24 cm is placed. The transport left Gouda early in the morning. At 07:00 the truck with the road plates was there. At 08:15 the transport arrived with window, carriage and barrel. Shortly before that, the 100 tonne crane had arrived. After the crane was well propelled it could be lifted. With great care, the window and carriage were first put in place. It was a bit exciting whether the link with the spindle cushion could be made, but it all went well. It all fitted perfectly. Then the barrel could be placed. That all fit very accurately. At 08:53 this work was done and the installation of various small parts could begin. After everything was ready, an attempt was made to move the window sideways over the bed with carriage and barrel. With four people it turned out to be quite easy, despite the total weight of about 18 tons. To fix this movement, a device has been installed under one of the wheels that makes movement impossible. The elevation of the barrel is also fixed to prevent accidents. The work of Ooms for making the bed and the work of Forge Frits Kramer together have yielded a wonderful result.
