Restoration Cannon 24cm Iron
The cannon that is being reconstructed is the 24 cm iron cannon that was supplied by Finspong from Sweden. The first cannons from this supplier were included in the armament in the Netherlands in 1870. Even before 1880, there were already examples of this type of artillery in the Fortress of Hellevoetsluis. After the expansion of the Fortress, which created the front I-II, this artillery was placed on wooden beds. In 1882, cement beds were made for this purpose.
This reconstruction is unique, as there is no other place in Europe known where such a cannon can be seen in public space.
Forge Frits Kramer from Hekendorp is carrying out this reconstruction for Ooms Construction from Middelharnis. The forge has worked carefully to bring back as much detail as possible. The special thing about this project is that an original loop will be the core of this reconstruction. Around this authentic barrel, the shooting tube (barrel) will regain its original thickness. The barrel that was found is missing the steel sheaths that were supposed to protect the barrel against the force of the explosion.
Blacksmith Frits Kramer is admirably working to bring back a lot of detail. Despite these efforts, the cannon will not be able to fire. It will also not be possible to continue operating elevation etc. because this cannon will be placed in the public space and could therefore be vulnerable to damage. However, it will be possible to make it clear with the help of a guide how this cannon was fired and what the functions of the various parts were.
The original barrel was cleaned by a specialized company. A number of interesting inscriptions appeared on the mouth of the cannon, such as the year of manufacture (1873) and the serial number of the barrel (No. 41).
