Atlantic Wall
General:Anyone walking or cycling in the dunes will undoubtedly come across them at some point: German bunkers from the Second World War. But not everyone will know that they are the visible remains of the Atlantic Wall, a 5200-kilometre-long defence line that ran from Norway to southern France. The story of the Atlantic Wall is about its construction and military significance, but also about lesser-known aspects such as the mass evacuations, demolition and reconstruction. The bunkers and other remains form a memorial landscape that refers to the dark past of the Second World War. Cultural education: Locally available means that a piece of history can be seen and experienced live. There are also interesting remains of the Atlantic Wall in Hellevoetsluis. | |
Atlantic Wall Passport: The heritage passport about the Atlantic Wall is an informative assignment booklet intended for children between the ages of 10 and 14 and takes them on a journey of discovery along the Atlantic Wall in South Holland plus IJmuiden. This can also be interesting for parents/supervisors!
