The art of digging
OverviewThe Art of Digging, Ravense Hoek: the history an open book.
The new housing estate Ravense Hoek in Hellevoetsluis is located in the area that was part of the Oosthoek in the 13th century.
Already before the year 1220, the Flemish Cistian Abbey Ter Doest had an Uithof here, later equipped with a brick residential tower located on a raised hill and surrounded by a moat. This courtyard complex also included a church, a cemetery and a complete settlement.
Because of these remarkable archaeological and cultural-historical data, the municipality of Hellevoetsluis has asked modern visual artists to shape the historical and archaeological story in the new residential area in many inspiring ways.
The intention is to make the history of the former community around the residential tower permanently visible to posterity.
